About this ride

Please carry details of your address and an emergency telephone contact number, just in case.

Route out. Arrowe Park, Barnston, Heswall (highest point on the route, 292 ft), Thornton Hough, Raby, Hooton, Capenhurst, Backford (Chester Gates), then Saughall, over the Saltney Ferry bridge, Bretton and into Higher Kinnerton and Walters Cafe. 25.8 miles with only 425 ft of climb.

Lunch at Walters about 12:45. If you have any dietary needs please contact the cafe and make your own arrangements (walterscoffeehouse.co.uk).

Return route. 19.8 miles with 675 ft of climb, mostly in the first two and a half miles: Higher Mountain (so go easy on your lunch), Hawarden, Queensferry and over the bridge, through Deeside Industrial Estate, over Burton Marshes (boards) to Burton, then Ness, Neston, the Runnel / Boathouse Lane, Heswall, Barnston and back to Arrowe Park. 45.6 miles in total.

The map above is the route out. The return route is on Komoot: https://www.komoot.com/tour/755580258

Possible obstacles. No major problems, it is familiar to most of us. We will take extra care crossing main roads and major junctions and look for crossings, islands and traffic lights.

Trains. Several Merseyrail stations on the outward leg. After lunch the Wrexham to Heswall train will get you back (Buckley 12:29 or 13:57, or Shotton). Bring money for lunch and the train if you might use it.

Questions by email please to Peter Williams.
