Ride grades

Grade Pace Distance Terrain
D 8 to 10 mph 20 to 30 miles Mostly flat, gentle hills
C 10 to 12 mph 25 to 40 miles Moderate hills
B 12 to 15 mph 35 to 50 miles Serious hills are fine
A over 15 mph 50 to 100 miles Long and hilly

New riders should start with a Grade D ride.

Riding in a group

Never ride more than two abreast, except when passing. Call out hazards ("Slowing!", "Stopping!"). Ride single file on narrow or busy roads. Point out potholes to the riders behind you.

What to bring

Weather-appropriate clothing, a spare inner tube, pump and tyre levers, food and drink, money for the cafe, a mobile phone with an emergency contact, and lights for autumn and winter rides. Your bike must be safe and roadworthy; mudguards are a kindness to whoever rides behind you.

Not sure which grade?

Three quick questions. Nothing is saved.

How far do you usually ride in one go?
On flat road, on your own, what pace feels comfortable?
How do you feel about hills?
